Hi and Welcome…

So…why am I doing this?   Why have a site for Long Island birding and birders?

Well, during the course of my life (I am now 60 years old) I have taken the world around me for granted; especially Long Island.  I was never an “outdoors” type person.  Give me a good book and a comfortable chair and I could stay immobile for hours.  Sunny day?  I would much prefer to be lazy and stay indoors.  My family never went camping, hiking, boating….nothing outdoors.

So….I never knew….

I never knew how truly beautiful this Island we live on is.  I never knew how diversified the habitat is.
I never knew how much wildlife there actually is out there.  I never knew how satisfying it can be to walk in a patch of woods and actually SEE what’s around me.

I never knew.  But then, about 12 years ago, I discovered “birding”.

Oh, I had always been, somewhat, interested in watching the backyard birds.  They were pretty and provided amusement on boring days.  But a friend and I started to go out and actually LOOK at birds in the wild, watch them, notice them.  It opened up a whole new world, and Island, to me.  An amazing Island!  A beautiful Island!  A unique Island filled with feathered wonders!

Do I gush?  Do I sound “over the top”?  Maybe…..but I am learning, and that is always exciting, I still feel young at this and therefore filled with wonder.  I read and soak up as much knowledge as I can.  It’s a challenge and helps keep me sharp.  There is SO much to learn about the birds I watch and that share this Island with me.  And I want to share all that with others; not only with other birders, but with all other Long Islanders.

The birds are a marvel of flight, of beauty, of survival.  They face immense challenges in our environment today.  In many cases they are losing the battle, and in some cases they are thriving despite habitat destruction.  We can learn so much from them.

So, I would like to do my part in introducing some of our feathered friends to those of you new to this, and to re-introduce them to those of you who are “old hands” at this.  Along the way, I hope to discuss and raise your level of awareness, not only regarding the birds, but of the other important environmental issues surrounding them.  And to keep you informed about what’s happening in the Long Island’s birding world.

It’s a joy that has become a passion….and I want to share!
What else is the internet for?
