Birding the South Fork
(with Eric Salzman)
Any season is a great time to visit Dune Road. Winter is my personal favorite time of year. The crowds don't start until the end of May and until then you can still get by without a permit. (Permits required after July 1st, unless real early in morning.) Spring & Autumn you will find lots of shorebirds and wading birds, as well as hawks!. Drive slowly and visit all the pull-offs along the road, watch the canals, and visit the ocean side as well as the bay side.
There are so many places to bird on Long Island! Some are good all year round and some can be special during different seasons. Hope this page helps you explore some of these spots ... and Good Birding! wherever you go!
Explore these locations anytime of year!
Got a spot you like and want to share; send me a short paragraph with highlights of the area, location of your spot, and maybe a photo (if you have one). email me!
