Yes, there are books for birders that are NOT guides or for reference!
There are many books about birds, and birders, that are meant to entertain, but of course end up teaching us as well.   These are the books that make you want to travel to the places written about, and to see birds from different parts of the country or world.  These books not only teach us, but also broaden our horizons.  These books make us laugh, maybe cry, and certainly give us pause for thought.  These books can enlighten us about birds, nature, conservation....and maybe even ourselves.

What field guides are best?
Field Guides are a personal decision.  The guide that you pick will depend on the style that will help you to identify the bird best.  Do you like drawings, photographs or computer enhanced drawings?  Do you like indicators showing the field marks, or do you like in-depth descriptors?  Find what works best for you and stick with it!  I find that most birders like to have more than one fiield guide on their book shelf.  Carry your favorite with you, and have others as further reference.  Very often I find it may take several guides to finally, and completely, decide just what that bird was that I saw!

Currently My Favorite Field Guides:
- Birds of Eastern & Central
      North America, 5th Edition
      by Roger Tory Peterson
- Birds of North America,
       by Ken Kaufman
- National Geographic Birds
       of North America
- Sibley Field Guide to Birds
        Eastern North America
Why Reference Books?
Reference books are to give you more information about those birds that you just identified with your Field Guide.  Reference books will help you "make friends" with the bird......really let you get  to know the species.  Some reference books can be fascinating reading and leave you wanting to know even more.  However, if a reference book is too scientific (and you don't have that kind of mind) it can be a totally unrewarding experience.  Therefore, pick a book that will have you wanting to read, and read, and read!
