| Sharp-shinned Hawks - Small, between Robin & Pigeon, body slight - Tail long & narrow, usually square shaped at end - Wings short, rounded & broad - Head appears small when flying, all tail & wing: "flying mallet" - Streaking from chest to belly - Tail banded light & dark, terminal band narrow & dark grey - Wing beats quick, snappy & hurried, punctuated by glides |
| Cooper's Hawk - Crow-sized rapton: long, lean, lanky - Body tube-shaped - Head large, heavy - Tail long, usually rounded at end - Banded tail, with broad, white terminal band - Holds head ahead of body in flight: shaped like "flying cross" - Fine, orange barring on chest - Wing beats slower than that of a Sharp-shinned Hawk. |
